the high slopes of the Alps. Some of them
are simple in the extreme, a shelter with one
room, a fireplace and some bunks. During my
trips to Inner Arosa, I had heard about an

winter. Our first visit to this hut, the Berghaus Heimeli (Homely Inn), was utterly memorable.
The Heimeli is a typical mountain cabin made of logs
on the outside and panels of arve on the inside. It was
built in 1707. You have to bend down to get inside the
door, and you can touch the ceilings of the three snug
ground-floor rooms. On the two floors above is the
sleeping accommodation. There are double rooms on the
first floor and dormitory beds on the second. All are
spotless, the linen in traditional off white, hand-
embriodered with red thread. A truly traditional Swiss
mountain hut, it was almost like a Heidi house.
