There are long stretches of coastline, inland valleys and mountains, fertile lava fields and isolated islands,Sicily has always been strategically important and over the many years had to endure battles from the various conquerors. It is something of a living museum- the past is always with you.
You can see this very much in the architecture, the various styles, but to me it is especially strong in the food . if you put all the specialities of Sicily on a long table you would have the whole history of the island spread before our eyes.
The two main markets in Palermo are ‘ Vucciria’ and ‘ Ballaro`’.
The vegetable stands are ablaze with colour, peperoni, tomatoes, eggplants, tiny artichokes, fresh herbs.
Then you have the fish stands, selling from enormous tuna to tiny, shiny sardines, the cheeses, pickled vegetables, it is endless. Everybody is shouting, atvertising their wares. It is so lively and full of life!
