Val Fex

One of my favourite places in the world is the Val Fex, a beautiful high valley in the Engadine in Switzerland.

Sometime in the 1950s the locals voted to preserve its special beauty banning cars, supporting traditional dairy farming and restricting new building. The result is a miracle of preservation that becomes more special every year. Right now the wild flowers are just a dream. It's like walking through somebody's garden, but here nature is the gardener. The Alpenrosen, a member of the rhododendron family, are just starting to flower and cover the higher slopes in strong pink. The mountain lakes below are like glass, reflecting the dark blue sky and a wilderness of craggy peaks.
